The Connection:

This episode traces back to “The Presence Premium,” an essay I published almost four months ago about why companies built around in-real-life, experiential offerings are so well positioned right now. I flagged Milky Way Park as maybe the most on-trend business of them all, and within 48 hours of posting the piece I was on a call with Matt.

Quote of the Episode:

“It’s really hard for me to overstate how important these sports have been in my life. When you do something hard with other people in the outdoors, you build a bond with them that is really special and very hard to replicate.”

Bet You Didn’t Know:

Matt earned his partnership with Thomson Bike Tours partly by passing a test he did not know was a test. Founder Peter Thomson invited him to Barcelona to go riding and quietly brought along one of his fittest guides. Matt put up what he thinks was his highest-ever five-minute power output getting over the climb.

Matthew Lloyd-Thomas is the Founder & CEO of Milky Way Park.

Prior to starting MWP, he was a Vice President at TCG. Prior to joining the firm, he was the Executive Director of Corporate Development at The New York Times, where he led the acquisitions of The Athletic, Wordle, and Serial Productions. He also oversaw The Times’s venture portfolio, leading investments in OpenWeb and Trint, and led operations for The Times’s audio business. Prior to The Times, Matthew worked at TA Associates and Bain & Company. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Yale Daily News Foundation.

Matthew is a graduate of Yale University and holds a B.A. in economics and history.
