In this episode of Under the Number, I sat down with Donald Stewart, a wide receiver who starred at both Stanford and Wake Forest. Joining me from Pensacola, Florida, Donald reflected on his unique journey from the rugged New Jersey high school football scene to becoming a major college contributor.
Hailing from the Big North conference in New Jersey, Donald cut his teeth against top-tier competition week in and week out. "The atmosphere on game day was electric," he remembered. "It felt like an Ohio State versus Michigan type game every single week."
At Paramus Catholic, Donald lined up alongside future NFL standouts like Jabrill Peppers and Rashan Gary. "Being around elite talents with top-notch work ethics really molded my approach both on and off the field," he noted. "It forced me to elevate my game."
Donald's recruitment was a roller coaster ride, featuring limo trips, VIP treatment, and even a memorable snowstorm during a Michigan visit. Ultimately, the opportunity for a "40-year decision" led him to choose Stanford.
Life as a Cardinal came with challenges, from battling injuries to navigating academic hurdles and a stacked depth chart. "I had to really scrap and claw for every opportunity," Donald admitted. But he cited his faith and his family, particularly his younger brother Justin, as his sources of motivation. "So much of my drive came from wanting to make my brother proud and stand up for him," he shared candidly.
After a graduate transfer to Wake Forest and an impressive final campaign, Donald is now immersed in diverse passions, spanning coaching, music, and acting. Yet the lessons he gleaned from his playing days still guide him. "Always bet on yourself," he emphasized. "Discover what brings you balance and don't be afraid to expand your network."
